I’m excited to join the forum although this whole process is a bit new to me. My siblings and I are planning to move to Italy and retire there in the spring of 2026 after living in the US for many years. Were all German citizens so were hoping thatll make things a bit easier when we make the move.
Our income will mostly come from US Social Security so were on the lookout for an affordable place to rent, ideally somewhere warm in Italy. Were also not too sure about how the Italian tax system works and are assuming well still need to file US taxes. As German citizens we can also work in Italy if needed but our goal is to avoid that if possible.
Were also curious about health insurance costs for expats in Italy.
If anyone has gone through a similar experience wed love any advice or tips on how to make the transition smoother. Thanks in advance.

Your German citizenship will give you a big leg up on settling in there smoothly. My neighbor moved to Spain last year and said getting good advice on taxes, both US and local, upfront was super important for their peace of mind.
